Tioman Island, Malaysia Plan a trip

If you’re looking for an incredible diving destination in Malaysia, Tioman Island is a safe bet. For years, divers and snorkellers have flocked here to explore the colourful coral and the native marine life. See what you can discover during your stay. Tioman Island sits off the east coast and is easy to get to from Kuala Lumpur.

There’s only one main road in the entire place, so you’ll probably prefer to get around by boat. It’s how the locals do it. The beaches here are stunning. Take in the sun while lounging on the white sand, then cool off in the shade of the tall palm trees that line the shore.

Snorkelling and diving are the main activities here. There are plenty of places where you can learn to dive if you’ve never done it before. Golden Reef is full of huge boulders, as well as soft and hard corals and is a great place for beginners. Pulau Chebeh, by contrast, is a rocky labyrinth of caverns and walkways where you might spot a triggerfish or turtle.

More experienced divers should head to the Sawadee Wrecks. Two old fishing boats sank here and they’re now home to scorpionfish, juvenile barracuda and more. There’s plenty to explore on land, too. Hike up the rugged trails through the mountains and discover the dense vegetation. You’ll probably find a waterfall or two hidden in the thick emerald canopy. Cool off in its waters before making your way back to your accommodation.

Tioman Island is one of the most laid-back and inviting places in the South China Sea; it has fantastic views of the swirling ocean, as well as a few semi-traditional villages to explore.

Despite its popularity, Tioman Island has barely been touched by human hands. Make the most of its unspoilt beauty during your stay.
