Mae Hong Son, Thailand Plan a trip

Mae Hong Son is one of the northern provinces of Thailand and for many travellers, it’s seen as the typical Thai resort in terms of its remote setting and activities galore. The resort is nicknamed ‘the city of three mists’ as it’s often the case that the entire city is shrouded in mist. One of the main reasons why travellers choose to come here is for its spectacular mountain ranges, which are great for trekking. Within the mountains, you’ll also come across local hill tribe villages. There are many places in this area which offer guided tours, so if you don’t fancy venturing off alone, you can always get the assistance of a local.

A great way to escape the heat of the midday sun is to pay a visit to the Tham Pla Fish Cave. Visitors are attracted to this cave, in particular, due to the thousands of Pluang Hin fish that live in the water channel.  Another popular attraction is the Pha Sua Waterfall, which has an impressive six levels!

If you wish to discover more about the area’s culture, you’ll love Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu temple, which can be viewed from most parts of the town. Founded in 1860, you’ll discover a Burmese-style interior, as well as other fascinating structures including the classic Buddhas. However, most people visit to see the mind-blowing 360-degree views from the top of Doi Kong Mu hill, where the temple is situated. Here you can spot Pai Valley and the Burmese mountains, and it’s been noted as the perfect spot to watch the sunrise and sunset.

What’s great about Mae Hong Son is that it’s extremely compact, so walking from each attraction shouldn’t be much of a problem. However, if you’re eager to see the surrounding areas, hiring a bicycle or motorbike would be the ideal solution.

Mae Hong Son is perfect for those who want plenty of things to see and do, whilst having the option to sit back, relax and enjoy a spot of local culture.
