Grand Baie is a picturesque seaside town located in the region of Rivière du Rempart in Mauritius. Founded in the 17th century, the Dutch used to call this place the “bay without end”, and it’s easy to see why. Although the destination is popular with travellers from all over the world, it’s far from rowdy or overcrowded. Many holidaymakers choose to visit Grand Baie to be surrounded by the crystal-clear ocean and white sands, whilst having plenty to see and do during both the daytime and evening.
For those who like to dip their toes in the ocean, the main Grand Baie Beach offers a vast selection of water sport activities such as windsurfing, water-skiing and sailing. If you aren’t so confident in the water, you’ll find dinghies floating around in the shallow areas which you can jump on if you simply wish to relax and soak up the sun.
La Cuvette Beach, which is also close to the centre, is a far more laid-back option compared to the main beach. Smaller and less populated, it’s an ideal choice for sunbathing or taking a relaxed stroll. Dive underwater to get up-close-and-personal with some of the resort’s colourful marine life. For more experienced divers, there are several dive sites to be found along the coral reef.
Grand Baie is home to fashion boutiques, craft shops and even more traditional stores – some of which have been running for over half a century. If you’re a retail therapy fan, you’ll never tire of the shopping on offer here. There are also plenty of restaurants and bars dotted around in the downtown district, which you may choose to visit after dusk.
There are several ways you can get around Grand Baie. Cycling is a great choice as bikes can be hired from several outlets for a small fee, while some even give them out free of charge. If you hope to explore the outer areas, cars and motorbikes can also be hired easily. Although Grand Baie is a lively resort, it’s a far cry from the typical party destination and makes a great choice for some relaxation with plenty of fun-filled activities at your disposal.
