Bentota, Sri Lanka Plan a trip
Ready to soak up the sun? Head to Bentota, where you’ll find some of Sri Lanka’s most impressive beaches. While more developed than some parts of the island, Bentota remains a fantastic sport for a relaxing break.
Bentota is a beautiful resort town in the Galle district, on Sri Lanka’s southwest coast. This is the perfect spot for a relaxing few days, taking it easy on the pristine sands of Bentota’s long, coconut-tree dotted beach. If you can drag yourself away from the sun-kissed beach, there are also tropical gardens and a colourful 12th century Buddhist temple to explore. Or if you prefer life on the wilder side, grab your surfboard and test your mettle against one of the high waves this coastline is known for.
While this is one of Sri Lanka’s more popular beach resorts, you don’t need to worry about crowds, tacky souvenir shops or noisy beach bars. All you’ll find are luxury resorts and villas tucked away behind the palms, along with discretely positioned world-class hotels. Some are located around the sea lagoon, only accessible by boat. Occasionally, you may see someone collecting flower sap from the palm trees here. This is used to brew toddy, an alcoholic drink popular on Sri Lanka.
Bentota is an area of stunning natural beauty, surrounded by exotic forests, diverse wildlife and pretty landscaped gardens. Lose yourself in the greenery, and you may even spot some of the tree frogs and sea eagles that call Bentota home. Just watch out for the crocodiles!
A visit to Bentota is the ideal way to recharge your batteries and be lulled by the laid-back pace of an unspoilt, quintessentially Sri Lankan coastal town.
