So let’s dive straight into why we believe Vietnam is the ideal destination for solo travellers, and what hidden treasures await you in this magical land.
What Makes Solo Travel in Vietnam So Special?
While Vietnam caters to every type of traveller, for solo travellers Vietnam really does offer something unique. The local people are both warm and hospitable, meaning you will feel welcome wherever you go. But it’s the diversity of experiences, from crazily busy cities to serene countryside, that ensures there is always something new to discover.
For us, one of the best aspects of solo travel in Vietnam was the freedom we had to explore at our own pace, and it will be for you too. If you dream of spending your morning checking out ancient temples, your afternoon exploring jungle caves and your evening chilling out on a secluded beach, Vietnam is the place for you.
Ancient Temples
Vietnam has a rich history, which is most beautifully encapsulated in its many ancient temples and shrines. When you decide to solo travel in Vietnam these sacred sites will offer you a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the major cities, offering the perfect place for reflection and meditation.
For example, in Hoi An you will find the iconic Japanese Covered Bridge along with ancient Chinese temples that will leave you feeling like you have been transported back in time. If you are looking for an even more spiritual experience then head to My Son Sanctuary. Featuring a cluster of ancient Hindu temples in the middle of the jungle, these structures are truly awe-inspiring.
Even the cities offer the most incredible historical structures. In Hanoi, you can visit the Temple of Literature, a temple created as a tribute to Confucius and education in general. This stunning building is a must-see for those who decide to solo travel in Vietnam.
Mysterious Caves
For those of you who have decided to solo travel in Vietnam for adventure, the wonder caves of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park offer all of the excitement you could want! This UNESCO World Heritage site is a paradise for explorers as the area is home to some of the world’s largest and most impressive caves, the most famous of which is Hang Son Doong, the largest cave on the planet!
In fact, Hang Son Doong is so large it can take several days to fully explore and is full of wonders, such as huge stalagmites and even underground rivers. But please take our word for it…this trek isn’t for the faint-hearted! If you’re looking for something similar that doesn’t require advanced trekking skills, we suggest the Phong Nha and Paradise Cave, which are equally breathtaking but a little easier to reach.
When we visited and trekked these caves by ourselves we were blown away by the sense of solitude and wonder we felt, unlike anything we have felt anywhere else on our travels. Vietnam’s cave systems really do have to be seen to be believed!
Coastal Treasures
No solo travel in Vietnam would be complete without visiting one or more of the endless stunning beaches on offer. Vietnam’s coastline stretches over 3,200km and is dotted with hidden beach gems just waiting to be explored.
A popular favourite is Pho Quoc Island, which we guarantee will blow you away with its crystal-clear waters and pristine beaches. But, if you’re like us and prefer to get off the beaten track and really explore, we suggest heading to Quy Nhon or Mui Ne. Here you will find quieter beaches and a generally more laid-back atmosphere.
Or perhaps you really want to get away from it all with the ultimate hidden beach experience? Well, in that case, we highly recommend you seek out Con Dao. This small archipelago delivers some of Vietnam’s most untouched, wild, and beautiful beaches, where you can lose days exploring the area and submerging yourself in the area’s many wonders.
