Transport

If you want to see as much of the island as possible, you can hire a car. The roads are good quality, driving standards are reasonable and parking is often free.

Fly into Taipei and explore that first, as the city has an excellent public transport system. Then you can hire a car and set off – perhaps taking a circular route depending on your itinerary. Just make sure you have an International Driving Permit first.

However, if you prefer not to drive, there are lots of other ways to get around. You can plan a trip involving a combination of high-speed trains, buses and convenient tourist shuttles on popular routes.

Best time to visit

April to June and September to November are the cooler months, and are also outside of typhoon season. A two-week trip with the family later in the year should be ideal for exploring the island at a leisurely pace.

Now, what is there for kids to do in Taiwan? In short, absolutely loads. The island nation is an adventure playground for visitors of all ages, whether you’re in search of stunning natural wonders or fun tourist attractions.

• Taipei

This hectic, colourful city has playgrounds, child-friendly restaurants and lots of things to do and see. The kids will love the colourful temples, Taipei Zoo, the Maokong Gondola cable car and vibrant Shilin Night Market. Plus, there’s the chance to climb the huge Taipei 101 skyscraper and enjoy amazing panoramic views over the city.

• Taichun

Taiwan’s second city is home to the brightly painted Rainbow Village, along with the interactive Taichung Science Museum. It’s also a great place to try traditional Taichung bubble tea.

  • Alishan Forest Railway

Your kids will love riding the narrow-gauge railways up to the mountain resort of Alishan in Chiayi County. There are over 50 tunnels and 77 wooden bridges, along with impressive views once you get to the top.  

• Chiayi Central Fountain and night market

On route to the Wenhua Night Market in Chiayi, stop by the Central Fountain. It dances! Have towels at the ready, because your kids won’t be able to resist joining in the water dances which change every 15 minutes.

There are also the spectacular East Coast beaches in Kenting National Park, shrimp fishing in Kaohsiung and the Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village in Nantou County – which boasts the tallest free-fall ride in Taiwan.
