If good food is at the top of your list when planning a trip, go to Hong Kong. Seriously. This buzzing city is home to some of the most delicious, eclectic and exciting cuisine on the planet. But you don’t have to take just our word for it. Here’s a roundup of the best restaurants in Hong Kong according to Vogue:
Kicho
Also lauded by TimeOut for their “mastery of the charcoal grill”, Kicho is a central HK tori kappo restaurant that specialises in chicken. Its chefs use only free-range chicken bred in the Kagoshima Prefecture, where the poultry is known for retaining the perfect fat content no matter how you cook it.
You can take your pick from a range of mouth-watering dishes, including yakitori skewers of slow-cooked chicken comb and baked monaka with chicken liver paste.
The omakase menu (similar to a tasting menu, where the chef selects seasonal specialties) includes everything from chicken broths to fresh vegetable dishes. And it’s all washed down with sake and wine pairings from vineyards in the Miyazaki Prefecture.
Chinesology
A fascinating concept restaurant in central Hong Kong, Chineseology which aims to explore the wonders of Chinese cuisine from a contemporary perspective. Head chef Saito Chau brings unique creativity to the cooking, in exciting dishes such as Preserved Plum Mousse with Cherry Dressing, and Oolong Tea Smoked Chicken. The restaurant itself is also pretty stunning, a large space with oriental gardens and views of Victoria Harbour.
Yaichi Kura
Can’t decide what to have? Take your pick from four different Japanese-inspired concepts at Yaichi Kura in Kennedy Town.
There’s an izakaya (a casual Japanese bar) called Toge with French-inspired dishes, and Eclipse by Luna Café & Bar for more all-day dining options. Highlights on this menu include cod crab eggs benedict and Hokkaido uni carbonara.
There’s also 81Station for Japanese-sourced goods, and Painduce – a renowned bakery chain from Osaka. And it’s all under one roof.
Grand Majestic Sichuan
Located in central Hong Kong, there’s a fabulous new Sichuanese restaurant to discover. Grand Majestic Sichuan is owned by Black Sheep Restaurants, with Robert Wong on head chef duties. The menu is inspired by food writer Fuschia Dunlop, who’s written two books on the mesmerising complexities of tongue-tingling Sichuanese food. This opulent restaurant is perfect for date night, thanks to its plush velvet upholstery and glamorous décor.
Agora
Now for something a little different. Agora specialises in Spanish fine dining, under the care of head chef Antonio Oviedo. You’ll find this intimate restaurant nestled in the Tai Kwun centre for heritage and arts, in central Hong Kong. Expect delights such as the Txuleta meat chop, showcasing prized Spanish Rubia Gallega beef, and other traditional dishes such as Pil Pil cod confit.
BluHouse
