Looking for your new favourite destination for making magical memories with the kids? It could be time to discover Hong Kong.

Hong Kong has a reputation for glamour and luxury shopping, and as a hub for international business. But what not everyone realises is that this vibrant city is also a fantastic holiday destination for families. There’s something here to delight travellers of all ages, from thrilling attractions to world-class hotels with family-friendly facilities.

Kids simply love Hong Kong, and not just because it has its own Disneyland. This is a high energy, neon-lit city that dazzles the senses, where there’s always something new to see or explore.

A roundup of the best things to do in Hong Kong with kids

Ready to start planning your trip to Hong Kong? Here are the contenders for the top spots on your itinerary…

Hong Kong Disneyland

If your children are a certain age, you just won’t be able to get away with not visiting Hong Kong Disneyland during your trip. It’s smaller than other Disney parks around the world, but you might consider this a good thing – it’s easier to get round, the queues are shorter and while many of the songs are in English, there are plenty of charming cultural and language differences to enjoy here.

The Peak

Every first-time visitor to Hong Kong has to head up to The Peak on the funicular railway. It’s practically mandatory. While you enjoy the amazing views across the city, the kids can run wild in its Mount Austin Playground.

Shek O Beach

There are a few popular beach spots in Hong Kong, but Shek O (meaning ‘rocky bay’, but don’t worry – the beaches here are sandy) is one of the most family-friendly. It’s also easy to access and very scenic, with barely a skyscraper in sight. Hire some bikes and go for a ride, or try your hand at mini golf.

Temple Street Night Market

Hong Kong really comes alive at night. So, if the kids are still up, it’d be a shame for them to miss out on one of its best after-dark attractions – the lamp-lit Temple Street Night Market. Here, you’ll find delicious street food, open-air Cantonese opera, interactive exhibitions and even a nightly light show across the harbour if you arrive at the right time.

Toy streets

That’s right, there are whole streets and markets in Hong Kong dedicated to toys. Some of the best spots include Fuk Wing Street in Sham Shui Po, and Tai Yuen Street in Wan Chai. Probably best to take your wallet with you, unless your children are cool with the concept of window shopping.

Museums

One of the best museums for families in Hong Kong is the interactive Hong Kong Science Museum, a marvellous hands-on activity for a rainy day. You can also pop into the Hong Kong Museum of History next door. It may not have car simulators and a 22-metre-tall Energy Machine like its exciting neighbour, but this is still a fascinating museum with some colourful interactive exhibitions for little ones.

Everything else!

There’s no space here to cover all Hong Kong’s many fabulous family attractions in detail, but you may also want to add the following to your must-do list:

·         A ride on the glass-bottomed Ngong Ping 360 cable car to the Big Buddha

·         Eating character dim sum in restaurants such as Yum Cha

·         Island hopping on boat rides among Hong Kong’s 200+ islands.
