La Folie Lodge, Champasak

Excellent - £££

Introduction

Located on a car-free island of staggering natural beauty in the middle of the Mekong River, La Folie Lodge is a fabulous place to stay in southern Laos.

Swim in the outdoor pool looking out over the Mekong. Dry off by taking a wander through the beautifully-kept tropical garden, where 39 different species of bird flit around the trees.

The island is within the Champasak cultural and natural landscape UNESCO world heritage site. Visit the ancient, crumbling Khmer Hindu temples of Vat Phu – only a 15-minute boat ride away. Or during the day, explore the island by bike. It’s a haven of traditional Lao culture where the locals are mostly fishermen and rice farmers living from the land and the water.

La Folie has made a conscious effort to give back to the local community. It’s been involved in a plethora of projects over the years, including supporting the local schools, improving the island’s paths, and helping low-income families get electricity.

Sleep in one of the lodge’s 27 comfortable rooms – furnished in natural wood, these include some good options for couples and families.

Facilities

The lodge operates with a friendly staff of island locals as part of its community outreach project. They can assist with lending bikes and organising fishing tours on the Mekong.

La Folie’s on-site restaurant offers both Asian and European options, to be enjoyed at the poolside. If you’d rather a slightly dressier setting, the bar – which is, incidentally, renowned for its excellent cocktails – has a comfy lounge great for mingling with your fellow travellers.
