Kulala Desert Lodge, Sossusvlei
Excellent - ££££
Introduction
The Kulala Desert Lodge sits within the private Kulala Wilderness Reserve. It’s not too far from the bright orange sand dunes of Sossusvlei; in fact, you’ll be able to see them from your terrace.
Make sure you go and see them up close; they’re simply incredible. Dune 45 is one of the most famous and easy to access, so it should definitely be on your itinerary.
Hiddenvlei is one of the least-visited dunes, so if you go there you’ll be virtually undisturbed. Make the most of the tranquillity and reflect on being in such an incredible place.
You should also visit the Sesriem Canyon and Deadvlei for more examples of this beautiful but unforgiving landscape.
There are 23 thatch and canvas ‘kulalas’ (chalets) for you to choose from at the lodge. They’re all built on raised wooden decks and have private verandas where you can enjoy a cocktail or two.
You can also lie on the flat rooftops to stargaze; the sky is incredible because there’s no light pollution.
Facilities
Like many hotels in Africa, the lodge has a main guest area where visitors can come together to talk and exchange stories from their travels. This is a great place to pick up a few ideas for places to visit on your trip.
There’s a lounge and a dining area here, as well as a plunge pool where you can cool off on hot days.
You’ll love the wrap-around veranda because it gives you incredible views of the waterhole in front of the lodge. Animals sometimes come here to drink, so keep your eye out for ostriches, springbok, gemsbok and hyenas.
Why We Love It
We love the Kulala Desert Lodge because it’s a quiet, comfortable place, embraced by the landscape that surrounds it.
