Belle Mare, Mauritius Plan a trip
Belle Mare is a destination that lives up to its name: the ‘beautiful sea’. As soon as you arrive, you’ll be astounded by the incredible views from the shoreline and will want to jump into that turquoise water the minute you put down your suitcases. It’s an idyllic spot for any holidaymaker and sits just north of Trou d’Eau Douce on the East Coast.
The towns here might be tiny, but they’re still worth looking around if you want to get a feel for local life. There are several high-end hotels and resorts to relax in, but more affordable options exist too. Either way, you get to enjoy some of the best beaches in Mauritius. Belle Mare itself is a 10 km stretch of pure white sand. The beach is lined with Casuarina trees where you can seek shade from the sun. Alternatively, you could take a dip in the blue waters of the Indian Ocean; they’re incredibly inviting.
Swim along the beach, go snorkelling or even take a glass-bottomed boat ride to make the most of this wonderful beachside paradise. If you like diving, go to The Pass; it’s one of the East’s most famous dive sites. While you’re there, you might see eagle rays, barracudas or maybe even a bull shark. You could also try your hand at water sports. There are many places to go water-skiing, windsurfing and laser sailing – you won’t get bored during your trip.
If you fancy doing something on land, take a tour of the island. Choose whether you want to go north or south (or both) and you’ll see everything from a dormant volcano to Hindu temples. Try using Belle Mare as a base for trekking up Lion Mountain. Those who get to the top of the 1,575-foot peak will be rewarded with outstanding views.
For something slightly more leisurely, have a round of golf at one of the two world-famous courses; the Links and the Legend. Even if you don’t like golf, you’ve got to agree that the views are hard to beat. Belle Mare is a wonderful blend of traditional coastal farms and a busy tourist haven. This clash of cultures means you’ll get the best of local and international food, so it’s also sure to please the ‘foodies’ amongst you.
