Coffee Bay, South Africa Plan a trip
Coffee Bay has changed very little over the centuries, which is perhaps what makes this destination such a cool place to visit. Small in size, it’s located on the Wild Coast of South Africa and is characterised by its jaw-dropping views and picturesque beaches.
Another one of the main reasons travellers choose to visit the area is the traditional Xhosa culture that remains here. The Xhosa-speaking people live here, and they’re the second largest cultural group in South Africa after the Zulu-speaking nation.
The town is named after the hundreds of coffee trees which grew all over as a result of a shipwreck that scattered beans throughout the area. Although these trees no longer exist, Coffee Bay has held onto its name.
The Hole in the Wall is perhaps the most popular activity for tourists in the area and is considered a geological wonder. It’s a huge rock formation with an impressively large hole eroded through the middle. There are many old tales about the hole – it’s been said that it’s a method of transportation to go back centuries and visit ancestors! However, the more logical reason is probably due to the erosion of the cliff against the waves. Many visitors either choose to hike alone or take part in a guided tour – this is completely up to you.
Coffee Bay is home to some incredible beaches, therefore if you’re keen on getting active, why not take a few surfing lessons? The lessons here are a fraction of the price in comparison to surrounding areas, so it’s a good place to try it out. There are also plenty of other activities to keep you entertained throughout your stay, including the Hluleka Nature Reserve, golf and horse riding.
When the sun goes down, there’s still lots to do. Most of the fun takes place in the backpacker hostels and hotels in the centre of town. During the daytime, you can come here to find out more about surfing and hiking, but during the evenings, it turns into a party area.
So, don’t be fooled by its relatively small size – whether you’re looking to enjoy the great outdoors or simply sit back and relax, Coffee Bay is worth the trip.
