Ella & Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka Plan a trip
Get away from it all up in the tea-growing hills of Sri Lanka, in the neighbouring communities of Ella and Nuwara Eliya.
This is arguably one of the most beautiful parts of Sri Lanka, with staggeringly beautiful views from its hilltops. If you love the quiet life, the peace and tranquillity of Ella in particular will really appeal. Ella is a small town in the Uva Province, in a remote spot partially disguised by tree canopies but don’t be fooled by the isolated location, as there’s plenty to see and do here.
Stay at one of the many fabulous guesthouses and boutique chalets here, and enjoy gentle strolls through the tea plantations during the day. You may even stumble upon a historic temple, or a secret waterfall. Or maybe try a more ambitious challenge – hiking along the mountain ranges up to Ella’s Rock. Take a moment to drink in the spectacular views through the stunning Ella Gap, looking down across endless green valleys and plains. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch a local train heading across the iconic Nine Arches Bridge. After an awe-inspiring day in this dramatic landscape, you’ll look forward to a delicious home-cooked Sri Lankan meal.
Over in Nuwara Eliya, which means ‘city on the plain’, you’ll find one of the most important places for tea production in the whole of Sri Lanka. It’s also one of the coolest spots in Sri Lanka, which will be blissfully refreshing if you’ve had too much sun earlier on your trip. Overlooked by the island’s tallest mountain, Pidurutalagala, Nuwara Eliya is known for its charming colonial era bungalows and pretty gardens.
