Hilton Head Island, USA Plan a trip
Take some time out to embrace chilled-out beach life at America’s favourite vacation destination – Hilton Head Island.
A gorgeous 12-mile barrier island in South Carolina, Hilton Head is easily accessed from Georgia, Savannah and Charleston too.
It’s a popular spot for relaxation and recreation, boasting mile after mile of pristine beaches. One of the prettiest is Coligny Beach with its soft white sand and stunning coastal views. This is a lovely place to spend a day, whether you’re sunbathing, sipping a cocktail at one of the many beachside bars or joining in a lively game of volleyball.
For a quieter afternoon, you can escape the crowds at Alder Lane Beach, Fish Haul Beach Park or one of the many other lesser-known beaches on the island.
Golfers will be in heaven on the championship-grade courses, with more than 20 to choose from. And as the area has a mild climate year-round, most aren’t closed during the winter – unlike some US golf resorts.
If you’re looking to immerse yourself in nature, you’ll be spoilt for choice here. The island has a number of wildlife preserves, including the Sea Pines Forest Preserve with its miles of walking trails and fascinating archaeological shell deposits. It even has its own ‘vanishing swamp’, which you can explore by boat.
And to see some of the magnificent animal species and native birds that live here, head to Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge. It spans 4 islands and over 4,000 acres, and is home to everything from armadillos and alligators to white ibis birds.
Hilton Head Island is also a mecca for foodies. Every year for the past 3 decades, it’s hosted a Wine & Food Festival spanning several days. Visit in March and you could join in the fun, sampling delights from local chefs, producers and winemakers.
