Khammuan, Laos Plan a trip
Khammuan is a province located in the heart of Laos, making it a perfect base to get around. The name translates as ‘happy gold’, which relates to the gold deposits once discovered in the area during the Middle Ages. The history of this destination dates back as far as the sixth century, when it was once part of the Sikhottabong Kingdom. Even today you’ll be able to discover some of the buildings that still stand from the colonial period, especially in the provincial capital of Thakhaek. Back in the early 20th century, the old town was heavily populated by the French, which can still be seen in most of its architecture.
Thakhaek relies on trade, so you’ll be sure to spot locals selling their wares whilst out and about. Some of their specialities include naturally-dyed cotton, handmade incense sticks and silk. The area is also heavily dependent on farming.
Khammuan is a great choice for getting involved in outdoor activities. If you’re a keen trekker, there are plenty of options to explore during your stay. You may decide to venture to the Phou Hin Boun National Park, where you can join a two-day trek through some of the natural wonders of the surrounding areas. There are also opportunities to visit the nearby Kong Lor Caves and the beautiful Khoun Khong Lang Lagoon.
If you fancy something a little more daring, why not try your hand at kayaking? There are many activities you can book to cater for all levels of experience; whether you hope to have a chilled-out river ride, or test yourself with some small rapids at the Nam Pakan Experience. If you’re a true adrenaline junkie, however, you simply have to try ‘The Loop’. Beware, that this activity is not for the faint-hearted! It consists of a tour of a few hundred kilometres of dangerous roads, which is normally completed on a hired motorbike.
To experience more of the ‘buzz’ of the local culture, the capital of Thakhaek is filled with a vast selection of shops, cafes and restaurants – most of which have WiFi access, for those who don’t like to stray too far from technology!
