Maui, Hawaii, USA Plan a trip
Maui is on most people’s bucket list of must-see destinations.
It’s one of the most famous Hawaiian islands, largely thanks to its spectacular beaches. And they’re not only gorgeous, but diverse too. Maui has white, red and black sand beaches to explore, while its warm, clear waters are fantastic for swimming and snorkelling. Visit in winter and there’s also the chance to see humpback whales migrating. Although to be honest, all you may want to do on Maui’s beaches is lay back, sunbathe and drink in the stunning scenery.
But if you can drag yourself away from the beaches, Maui has much more to offer. You’ll want to hang out in Lahaina, the historic seaside town turned Maui hotspot. Here you’ll find upmarket jewellery shops, amazing restaurants and art galleries, along with fantastic nightlife. Make sure to check out the Banyan Tree, an enormous multi-trunked tree brought over from India and planted in 1873.
Along with its beaches, Maui is also known for its breathtaking sunrises and sunsets – particularly at the Haleakalā Crater, Kaanapali Beach or Napili Bay Beach. It’s well worth getting up early to see one, but for late risers who miss sunrise there are plenty of spots to grab a Mai Tai and watch the sun go down in a blaze of vivid colour.
If you’re visiting Maui, you mustn’t leave before visiting the peaceful haven of Iao Valley with its abundance of tropical plants. You can also take a road trip to Hana, alongside lush tropical rainforests on a road carved out of the cliffs. Discover hidden waterfalls and bamboo forests along the way, and make sure to visit the Garden of Eden Arboretum – home to rare trees and unique flowers.
