Moorea, French Polynesia Plan a trip
Moorea is one of French Polynesia’s most beautiful islands, with jagged volcanic peaks, calm bays and a gentler pace that makes it a wonderful first stop after arriving in Tahiti. Just a short ferry or flight from Papeete, it feels instantly removed from the capital, with mountains rising straight from the lagoon and small villages strung along the coast.
The island is especially known for Cook’s Bay and Opunohu Bay, two deep inlets framed by steep green slopes. Head inland and you’ll find pineapple fields, forested valleys and viewpoints such as Belvedere Lookout, where the shape of the island opens up beneath you.
Moorea is also a brilliant place to enjoy the water without feeling too resort-bound. The lagoon is calm and clear, with opportunities to snorkel among rays, reef sharks and colourful fish. Boat trips often include a relaxed lunch on a motu, giving you that classic South Pacific feeling without the formality of a more polished luxury resort island.
There is plenty of time to do very little too. Spend slow days swimming, reading by the beach, trying local cafés or cycling along quiet coastal roads. Moorea works beautifully because it feels both spectacular and easy, offering scenery, culture and lagoon life in a way that never feels overcomplicated.
