Oahu, Hawaii, USA Plan a trip

Escape to the Hawaiian island Oahu for picture-perfect beaches, world-class surfing and stunning natural scenery. But don’t be fooled by its idyllic looks, as this volcano-studded landscape has plenty of surprises in store.

The third largest island in the US state of Hawaii, Oahu is home to the state capital of Honolulu. Here you’ll find the iconic Waikiki Beach, one of the most famous beaches in the world. If you’re learning to surf, this is the place to come – although Waikiki is also known for its vibrant nightlife.

You’ll have your choice of beaches on this island paradise, with something for everyone. Try your hand at windsurfing or kitesurfing at Kailua Beach, or snorkel on Kahe Point Beach Park (also known as ‘Electric Beach’).

But for adrenaline junkies, it has to be North Shore on Oahu – a magnet for daredevils. This 7-mile stretch regularly hosts premier surfing competitions, while also being a popular spot for skydiving and other water activities. If you’re feeling particularly brave, you can even go shark diving here.

If you’re hanging out in Honolulu, there are plenty of other irresistible attractions to check out. Take a stroll through the charming and historic Chinatown district, or the unusual Punchbowl Crater – a volcanic crater which has been turned into a cemetery.

For the best views on the island, lace up your hiking boots and head up Diamond Head. This huge volcanic crater is a tough climb, but the 360-degree coastal views at the top are well worth the effort.

Oahu also offers the chance to learn more about Hawaii’s history, with a visit to Pearl Harbor – the site of the 1941 WWII bombing attack. The visitor centre offers multiple museums, and a total of four historic sites.
