Philadelphia, USA Plan a trip

If you’re interested in America’s history, and can’t resist a good sandwich, Philly is the place for you.

Philadelphia is known as the birthplace of the US, as it’s where the Founding Fathers met and formed a new country. Luckily, much of Philly’s history has been preserved.

You can learn all about this World Heritage City at fascinating sites such as the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, which is where both the Declaration of Independence and US Constitution were signed.

In fact, if you visit the Independence National Historical Park, known as the “most historic square mile in America”, you won’t be able to take a step without virtually tripping over a landmark of historical importance.

History aside, Philly has lots to offer the eager visitor. It’s foodie heaven for a start, home of the almost mandatory Philly cheesesteak, along with a smorgasbord of treats at Reading Terminal Market. If you’re into sandwiches, you’ll find every kind under the sun here. In the evenings, you’ll be spoilt for dining choices, as there are countless critically acclaimed restaurants dotted throughout the city.

And if you must, go ahead and run up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art – made famous in the movie Rocky – and pose with the bronze statue of the man himself.

The art museum itself is well worth a visit, as is the former prison Eastern State Penitentiary just a short walk away. Another lovely afternoon out is at the Delaware River waterfront, an up-and-coming area with fantastic views of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge.

In need of some greenery? Head just outside the city to the beautiful Longwood Gardens, 1,000+ acres of spectacular meadows, flower displays and fountains. It’s one of the most stunning display gardens in the world, with 11,000 different plant varieties and 20 indoor gardens too.
