Rangiroa, French Polynesia Plan a trip
Rangiroa is one of the world’s largest atolls, a vast ring of coral surrounding a lagoon so wide it can feel more like an inland sea. Part of the Tuamotu archipelago, it offers a completely different side to French Polynesia: flatter, quieter, more remote and much more focused on the ocean.
The main reason many travellers come here is the marine life. Rangiroa is famous among divers, particularly around Tiputa Pass, where strong currents bring reef sharks, dolphins, rays and other pelagic life close to the reef. Even if you do not dive, there are beautiful snorkelling spots, boat trips and lagoon excursions that reveal just how rich these waters are.
Life on Rangiroa is wonderfully simple. There are no dramatic volcanic peaks or glossy resort strips. Instead, you’ll find coral roads, small villages, palm trees, blue horizons and a pace that follows the tide. Visit the Blue Lagoon, take a boat across the atoll, or spend the afternoon doing very little beside the water.
Rangiroa is ideal for travellers who want their French Polynesia trip to feel wilder and less obvious. It pairs beautifully with Moorea, Raiatea or Bora Bora, adding space, silence and extraordinary underwater life to the journey.
