Savannah, USA Plan a trip
For authentic southern charm, rich history and arguably the best al fresco dining scene in Georgia, it has to be Savannah.
The oldest city in the state, and one of the first planned cities in the US, Savannah is a city to be explored on foot. But only at a leisurely pace, or you’re bound to miss something. This compact, walkable destination is packed full of fascinating monuments, beautiful old buildings and secret cobblestone alleys of its famous Historic District.
The downtown area has over 20 wide, stunning public squares, all bursting with greenery and hanging Spanish miss. These public spaces are gloriously pretty, and a joy to spend time in on a sunny afternoon. One of its most famous among movie lovers is Chippewa Square, which was used as a filming location for Forrest Gump starring Tom Hanks.
Another must-visit spot is River Street, where you can shop, visit an art gallery and sample delicious local cuisine from the likes of the Fiddlers’ Crab House. You can even hop on a boat cruise along the Savannah River. And make sure you take a stroll through the botanical gardens, and take a moment to admire the remarkable Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist in Lafayette Square.
The city is home to many interesting museums, which tell Savannah’s story. This includes the Savannah History Museum, and the American Prohibition Museum where you can learn to make your own hooch. You can even take a ghosts and gravestones tour if you’re so inclined.
This is also a creative place, with talent on display everywhere from the colourful street murals to the galleries of the Jepson Center for the Arts.
Food is a pretty big deal in Savannah, and you’ll be spoilt for choice. From food trucks to beer gardens, rooftop cocktail bars to outdoor restaurants serving classic Southern cuisine – you’ll be in foodie heaven here.
And if you can tear yourself away from Savannah itself, there are plenty of fun day trip opportunities in the surrounding area. This includes a jaunt to nearby Tybee Island with its wide, clean beaches and warm waves.
