Taha’a, French Polynesia Plan a trip

Taha’a shares a lagoon with Raiatea, but has a softer, more aromatic character of its own. Often called the Vanilla Island, it is known for small plantations, pearl farms, quiet villages and a wonderfully slow pace of life. It feels intimate, local and gently removed from the more famous names in French Polynesia.

A visit here is usually about taking your time. Spend a day visiting a vanilla plantation to see how the island’s prized pods are grown and cured, then stop at a pearl farm to learn about the black pearls that have become so closely associated with French Polynesia. Between visits, the lagoon offers clear water, coral gardens and views across to Raiatea.

Taha’a is also a lovely place for low-key luxury. Some stays are set on motus around the island, with beaches, reef access and a stronger sense of seclusion than you’ll find in busier destinations. The pace is unhurried, and days can easily drift between swimming, reading, snorkelling and long lunches by the water.

It works especially well for travellers who want beauty without too much show. Taha’a may not have Bora Bora’s instant drama, but it offers something quieter and more personal: vanilla-scented air, lagoon light and a glimpse of island life that feels refreshingly unforced.
