Tahiti, French Polynesia Plan a trip

Tahiti is the gateway to French Polynesia, but it deserves more than a quick airport overnight. The largest island in the archipelago, it has a very different feel to the postcard-perfect lagoons of Bora Bora and Moorea. This is where everyday Polynesian life is at its most visible, from the morning bustle of Papeete Market to food trucks, black sand beaches and dramatic volcanic valleys.

Papeete is the island’s lively capital, with pearl shops, cafés, market stalls and the famous roulottes that gather in the evening to serve everything from fresh fish to crêpes and Chinese-influenced local dishes. It’s a good place to get a first taste of French Polynesia before heading deeper into the islands.

Away from the city, Tahiti becomes much wilder. The coastline is edged with dark volcanic beaches, surf breaks and views across the Pacific, while the interior is all green valleys, waterfalls and cloud-covered mountains. You can visit the Faarumai Waterfalls, explore the Arahoho Blowhole, or take a 4×4 into the island’s interior for a more adventurous day among rivers, peaks and dense rainforest.

Tahiti is often treated as a stopover, but it adds useful contrast to a French Polynesia trip. Stay a little longer and you’ll see a more local, rugged and culturally layered side to the islands.
