Montagu, South Africa Plan a trip
Montagu is a beautiful town that sits close to the Garden Route but isn’t as well known as some of its illustrious neighbours. The town sits in the Breede River Valley, so tall mountains loom over Montagu, providing shade throughout the day.
Montagu was once a famous Victorian spa resort thanks to the hot springs high up in the hills. But now it’s starting to become known due to its wine. Many say that this area has some of the best Winelands scenery on offer, so don’t forget your camera.
Start off your trip by strolling through the town; there’s plenty to see along its wide streets. Count the 24 national monuments and take in the iconic colonial architecture. The red-roofed Victorian houses and pretty, white churches are charming and quaint, while the more modern art deco architecture is something else entirely.
You could also try one of Montagu’s walking routes. The five-kilometre trek between Montagu and Ashton goes through Cogmans Kloof Pass and is absolutely breathtaking. It’s one of the most dramatic routes in the area as it cuts right into the valley’s rock face. Perhaps it’s unsurprising that Montagu is a hotspot for rock climbers and mountaineers. Some routes can be a challenge for even the most experienced climbers, but there are beginners’ courses and lessons available too. After a long day of hiking, trekking or rock climbing, head to the hot springs and submerge yourself in the warm water while looking out over the valley. It’ll ease your aching muscles and help you relax.
We love Montagu for its character and charm. The colonial architecture makes it one of the prettiest towns in this part of South Africa. However, there’s much more to it than meets the eye. There’s plenty for explorers, historians, hikers and climbers to get their teeth stuck into. Even those just looking to relax for a bit will love this historic spa town.
From here, you can take the scenic road to Oudtshoorn and discover more of the Winelands. Then you can hop on the Garden Route, which will take you all the way to Storms River in the Eastern Cape.
