Amakhala Safari Lodge, Amakhala Game Reserve

Excellent - ££££

Introduction

The Amakhala Safari Lodge is situated in a hidden section of the Amakhala Game Reserve, in the Eastern Cape. Just 45 minutes’ drive from Port Elizabeth Airport, this thatched lodge is said to offer the best views of the reserve in the whole of Amakhala.

Facilities

Situated a little further on from the main lodge are 11 safari huts, all of which are uniquely decorated with luxurious African-inspired interiors. Nestled in a secluded part of the reserve, it’s ideal for those looking for that spot of privacy. Fully air-conditioned, each hut is fitted with a double bath and a double outdoor shower.

With tented fronts which open out onto private decking, you have the opportunity to seek out wildlife in their natural habitat from the comfort of your own space. However, the best place to spot wildlife during the day is around the main lodge. Relax in the communal lounging area to see animals like monkeys, zebras and antelope playing freely.

Come evening time, you won’t want to miss out on the delicious four-course dinner cooked by the resident chef. For starters, you will be served the likes of soup and homemade bread, while mains are usually venison or ostrich cooked on coals. There is also a small plunge pool to cool off in at the end of the day and an on-site spa offering relaxing treatments.

Game drives leave twice per day, so you have plenty of opportunity to see the ‘big five’, which is the major draw for safari adventurers. You’ll be escorted by a knowledgeable guide who will give you all the information you need.
