Eastern Cape, South Africa Plan a trip

The Eastern Cape in South Africa has positioned itself as world-class centre for conservation. If you’re hoping to make a trip to this part of the world, you’ll find a vast selection of game reserves which are well worth seeing – most of which are home to the ‘big five’. All of the game reserves offer great accommodation and have been designated malaria-free.

The Amakhala Game Reserve covers 7,500 hectares and offers an extensive selection of wildlife. Here you’ll be able to find lions, elephants, buffalo, rhinos, cheetahs, giraffes and zebras – to name just a few. If you’re lucky, you may be able to spot some of the more reclusive animals such as the hyena and the bat-eared fox. Day and night game viewing trips are available, and you will normally make your way around the reserve with a local guide.

Set within 10,000 acres of rugged land, the Kariega Game Reserve offers striking views of green hills as far as the eye can see. This reserve offers a vast selection of wildlife – including the all-important big five, as well as many exotic bird species. With the park situated next to two rivers, you can either make your viewings on land in a 4×4, or take a cruise. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, you may also wish to make your way through the reserve by kayak.

One of the most popular options is the Shamwari Private Game Reserve. Years of hard work have turned the land into a conservation area. The hope is to bring the majority of wildlife back here, where they once roamed many years ago. Now in its 25th year, you have the opportunity of jumping onto a 4×4 to see a great selection of wildlife, as well as stunning greenery. Staff here are extremely knowledgeable and will be sure to answer any questions you have about the long-term conservation efforts that have taken place here.

These game reserves have very much put the Eastern Cape back on the map for those looking for the ideal safari experience. So, whether you wish to visit a selection of the reserves or just one, you certainly won’t be disappointed by the experience.
