Fish River Canyon, Namibia Plan a trip
Located in the south of Namibia, Fish River Canyon is the second-largest canyon in the world and one of the most popular attractions in southern Africa. We guarantee you won’t have seen anything quite like this before, despite the years of travelling you may have under your belt.
The river meanders through rugged cliffs of around 160 km. It spans an impressive 27 kilometres in width and a depth of 550 metres. The canyon was said to have formed around 500 million years ago, during which time the gorge was created by water erosion and the valley collapsed due to a movement of the earth’s crust. It truly looks as though you’re looking out over Mars!
Many choose to visit the Fish River Canyon as part of a self-drive holiday, due to the fact there are no airports nearby. It’s a great way to plan your individual schedule and travel at your own pace.
On driving through the area, you’re bound to come across some wonderful natural sights – including local wildlife. You’re most likely to spot kudus (a species of antelope known for its long spiral horns), mountain zebras and even klipspringer antelope. You might also be lucky enough to see the rare appearance of leopards, baboons and dassies if you look closely enough. Birdwatchers will be delighted to know that the area is also home to around 60 species.
The Fish River Canyon is a great place to visit if you’re a hiking enthusiast – but do bear in mind that it won’t be a doddle! The canyon is known to be one of the most challenging hiking trails in the whole of Africa; but don’t let that put you off, as it’s totally worth it!
To see the entirety of the canyon and its surroundings, you might wish to join a five-day self-guided tour. Make sure you make your way to the hiker’s viewpoint to witness the most spectacular scenery. At the end of a long day, unwind at Sulphur Springs. You’ll be greeted with palm trees and hot water flowing down the cliffs. It’s a sure-fire way to relieve your weary body after a day spent adventuring.
